We gathered our Day of the Dead pages here, to print at home or in the classroom. To color, there’s a three-tier altar, a catrina and a catrín, a decorated sugar skull and a blank one to design your own, a pan de muerto, a bunch of marigolds, some candles and a string of papel picado. For anyone who’d rather pick up the scissors, there are cut-outs to set up a small ofrenda, a paper catrina and catrín with clothes to dress them, and papel picado to cut and hang. They’re all free, as letter-size PDFs.

Which age are they for?

The simplest pages, like the pan de muerto, the candles and the sugar skull, have thick outlines and wide spaces, so children can color them from age 3. The altar and the catrina have more detail and suit kids who already color patiently, from about 4 to 9. The cut-outs need scissors and some patience: the paper catrina from age 5, and the papel picado from 6.

How to print

Print them on letter-size paper, in black and white and at actual size, with “fit to page” turned off. For the cut-outs, thin card stock or 120 gsm paper holds the glue better and doesn’t crease when you fold the tabs. Make as many copies as you need, for one child or the whole class.

The story behind the holiday

The pages are more fun when you know what they celebrate. On our blog we explain why the Day of the Dead falls on November 1 and 2, where sugar skulls come from and who created La Catrina. For writing, there’s our guide to calaveras literarias, the funny rhyming verses written for the living. And since both holidays fall in the same week, we also compare Halloween and the Day of the Dead; the pages for the night before are in Halloween printables for kids.

Questions

Can I use them at school?

You can print them, photocopy them and hand them out in class as many times as you need, with the whole group.

Is there an activity book too?

The Day of the Dead activity book has 40 activities for each reading level, for ages 3 to 9, with a free sample for each level.
