Shark, whale, octopus, lighthouse: the words in these four ocean word searches all come from the sea, and the puzzles get bigger as your child does. At four there are three short words in a 5 × 5 grid. At eight there are eight words hidden in every direction, some of them backwards. Each page has a line for your child’s name, and the last page of the PDF has the answers.

Ages 3 to 4 get a letter hunt instead. The word sits at the top of the page —an ocean animal or a boat— and its first letter turns up several times in a 4 × 4 grid below. There are four pages, one for each word.

Which word search fits each age?

Ages 3 to 4	Letter hunt: one letter to find, repeated across a 4 × 4 grid.
Ages 4 to 5	Short words like boat, crab, fish and orca, across and down. A 5 × 5 grid.
Ages 5 to 6	Four to six words a page, like shark, whale, beach and shell, still across and down. A 7 × 7 grid.
Ages 6 to 7	Six to eight longer words, like dolphin, octopus and turtle, now running diagonally too. A 10 × 10 grid.
Ages 7 to 9	Eight to twelve words a page, from clownfish to lighthouse, in every direction and backwards. A 14 × 14 grid.
