Cauldron, pumpkin, spooky, broomstick: Halloween is full of /k/ sounds, and each of those words spells it a different way. This free set turns that into four spelling activities with words of the season, each with its answer key, for children in first to third grade who already read and write with some ease.

It’s 7 letter-size pages. The color version looks best on screen, and the black and white one is the one to print at home or photocopy for the classroom.

What’s in the set?
| Activity | What it practices |
|---|---|
| C, K or CK? | Circling the missing letter and writing it in the box. Some words need two, c and k together |
| A Rule for Each One | Sorting words into c, k and ck columns, plus a “from one to many” plural section: candy becomes candies |
| C, K and CK Word Search | Finding eight Halloween words, across, down and diagonally |
| The Pumpkin Maze | Helping the candle reach the lantern through the inside of a pumpkin |
The rule, before you start
The worksheets practice the rule without explaining it again. In short, c goes before a, o and u; k goes before e, i and y; and ck comes at the end, right after a short vowel. The full rule, with its exceptions and more Halloween words, is in c, k or ck?, which is also where the QR codes on the sheets lead.
How to print
Print on letter-size paper at actual size, with “fit to page” turned off. The answer keys are at the end of the file; take them out before handing the pages out, or keep them for checking as a group.
Is there more?
For children who are just starting to read, ages 5 to 8, there are three free Halloween activities. The full seasonal pack, with 38 activities, is the Halloween activity pack, and everything else is in printables.
